Maschio’s Bufalo mulcher ready to take ground in Australia

European manufacturer Maschio adds to its extensive mulcher range by introducing its first front-mounted model to Australia this spring.

Maschio is known world over for its continuous pursuit of new, hi-tech solutions, employment of the best technologies and impeccable production standards.

Now, with the Bufalo, a front-mounted mulcher can be used in tandem with a rear attachment, such as a power harrow or rotary hoe, thereby significantly reducing costs and speeding up work given a greater area can be covered in a single pass.

“We’ve been working with Maschio’s R&D team quite extensively,” said Tom Wilkinson, Cultivation Product Manager. “In the middle of the year we tested a Bufalo on a pineapple plantation in Queensland and the results were outstanding.

“Of course, residue mulching is really important for the likes of vineyards and orchards. It aids the decomposition processes, helping residues break down into organic matter and putting those nutrients back into the soil.”

Agronomic advantages of mulching

  • Mulches crop residue to a fine consistency
  • Shreds prunings and breaks their fibres
  • Residues easier to work into soil
  • Improved microbial breakdown
  • Produces organic material
  • Improves soil fertility
  • Weed control
  • Insect and fungal disease control

The Bufalo is a rugged, heavy-duty model featuring ultra-solid construction. Designed to be deployed with tractors up to 200 hp, its comes into its own when tackling heavy brush and thick residues, thanks to its powerful hammers which readily break down tough material.

It also mulches at a fast rate, enabling large amounts of ground to be covered.

“This new model will suit intensive mulching on grass, uncultivated ground, fields where there’s a lot of crop residue, or vineyards and orchards for pruning and undergrowth management,” said Tom.

“Plus there are numerous options, so each customer can tailor the Bufalo to their own requirements. Maschio mulchers in general are so reliable, and the Bufalo will be a must-have for farmers and contractors alike.”

Environmental advantages of mulching

  • Reduced herbicide use
  • Wide application in conservation and organic agriculture

Financial advantages of mulching

  • Versatility of use
  • Good work rates

Bufalo features:

  • PTO gearbox: Input speed 1000rpm. The gearbox has a six-spline output shaft on each side allowing the Bufalo to be used as a front or rear mounted flail mower.
  • Linkage mounting: Category II three-point linkage mounting. The Bufalo features a double (front and rear) fixed position three-point linkage mounting to allow quick change over between front and rear mounting.
  • Transmission belt: Five toothed transmission drive belts transfer power to the rotor, allowing slip proof engagement, preventing power from the transmission being reduced due to heavy load or general wear.
  • Hammers: The hammers bolt onto an electronically balance rotor that minimises machine vibration and stresses on the bearings.
  • Rear roller: Features an adjustable internal self-cleaning rear roller. Debris is ejected behind the roller preventing debris/grass cuttings from being rolled in.
  • Protective safety guards: Front chains and rubber guards allow material to enter the cutting chamber but prevent pieces from being thrown out at high speed.
  • Hydraulic offset: Comes as standard, allowing the three point linkage frame to slide along the front (or rear) bar to select the offset to either the right or left.
  • Side skids: Featured as standard. The hard-wearing protective skids prevent wear to the machine and allow the operator to adjust the cutting length.
  • Long life bearings: The Bufalo uses barrel roller bearings, each bearing has a double rail consisting of two rows of spherical or barrel bearings to cope with heavy workloads. All bearings are produced by SKF, the world’s largest bearing manufacturer.
  • Double skin frame: Re-enforces the main structure of the machine and protects the external skin from wear and damage from debris inside the flail mower during work.
