We sat down with Morgan Leath Operations Manager at Tasmanian Seed Dressing to find out why Delmade is his number one go to for Grain Augers. Tasmanian Seed Dressing is a progressive seed dressing and storage company located in Carrick, cleaning a large range of crops including; Ryegrass, Peas, Linseed, Lentils, Hemp and Cereals for primary producers throughout Tasmania.
How did you get into the Ag Industry?
I’ve been working in the agricultural sector in one way or another since I was 16 years old. In my early twenties my brother and I got into the seed industry, he ended up in a senior role in South Island Seed Dressing & Storage Co which is today our parent company.
In 2012 concept came up of being involved in Tasmanian Seed Dressing, we came and had a look and made the decision to run with it. We’ve been here ever since and haven’t looked back.
Your thoughts about the future of farming in Tassie?
As far as security of supply for a multitude of commodities, Tasmania has been proven time and time again. In my eyes it’s the production bowl of Australia and with the drought issues and other producing factors on the mainland, Tasmania shines through from season to season as far as continuity of production.
With the increased availability of water in the state there is certainly a whole new level of agronomy that goes into crops. A whole new generation of farmers are now running significant properties and the level of seed production in Tasmania as grown substantially.
Water is pivotal in Ag growth. Tasmania is really on a burgeoning growth stage and in a lot of ways starting to seriously compete against New Zealand. With some clients are even talking about exporting seed into New Zealand.
Tell us about your experiences with Delmade?
Excellent experience. Delmade has high levels of customer service, the ability to custom order machinery that meets our requirements, we have good liaison with sales representatives, and nothing is a problem to resolve.
The flights in the Grainline Augers are so good. You put peas through them and barely any crack. Absolute value for money, twice as fast as a tubulator, faster and cheaper.
Do you have any big plans for the business?
We are continuously looking at plans for storage expansion and we will continue to promote the private sale of new silo banks into the growth sector and seed production company sector. My short to medium term goal is for two further cleaning plants installed into the latest shed we’ve put up.
What is your most important achievement in your time as Operations Manager?
Taking the business out of the past and into the future.
What is your view on the importance of good quality machinery to a business?
Extremely important! When you are working under pressure with clients lined up down the driveway there is no room for mechanical breakdowns, full stop or you will have a riot on your hands. Reliable machinery for a fast turnaround time when unloading trucks into our storage banks so that those transport operators can get back to the field is saving everyone money. High auger capacity is vital for an operation such as this.
We have four outward 8” x 11m augers from Grainline that are important to keep the cleaning plant supplied. We have 1 inward 10” x 18m auger from Grainline and one on order which will make 2 inward augers and my intention is to build on that number as our processing machinery expands.
The biggest thing that attracts me to Grainline Augers is that the gear looks good, its mechanically sound, its robust and its got forward technology on in. Especially the self-drive augers they are fantastic! I actually like working with Delmade and Grainline because they do take on suggestions from us and they take the ideas and further develop them.
