We sat down with local farm business manager Donald Gee to discuss why Delmade is his first choice in Agricultural Equipment and to learn some more about his successful family business.

Tell us about how you started farming?

We started with 600 hectares of grazing country running along the banks of Quamby Brook, in Westbury Tasmania.

How has your property grown to what it is today?

Today the business has grown to 1380 hectares. Running 5500 composite ewes and 500 head of Angus breeding cows, bolstered by a fodder cropping and pasture renovation program. We have invested in centre pivot irrigation and now have 250ha of fenced pivot circle irrigated land.

Your history in farming?

We bought the property in 1990 when I was 10 years old. In later years I attended Ag College in Geelong working on the mainland to gain knowledge and experience and then returned home to join the family business in 2004.

Your thoughts on the future of farming in Tassie?

With Agriculture in Tasmania booming I see the potential for huge growth in the market for the red meat industry. Tasmania is a good place to be farming, largely free from fires, floods, and drought.

Your experience with Delmade?

We have dealt with Delmade for many years I can recall purchasing a Delmade roller from Dj Machinery back in 1995. Service is terrific, if I can get the equipment from Delmade, I always go down that road first. It is a superior product. With tractors and equipment getting bigger the quality of the product is reflected in that. I can put a worker on a tractor with a well-maintained piece of Delmade equipment and you just don’t get phone calls that something is broken or not right.

What is one piece of Delmade Equipment you couldn’t be without on the farm?

Our heavy 42-inch Delmade roller is our favourite tool and we are constantly using it. Also, our 4m disc with coil packer.

What is your view on the importance of good machinery in a successful farming enterprise?

My biggest aim in farming is effective use of labour and the best use of capital, everything has to earn its keep.

What would be your most important achievement in your time managing the family business?

Our biggest achievement has been to get scale in our operation, and we’ve managed to keep the risk down.
