Stump Jump Harrows - Is there a reason not to harrow?
Posted Nov 19, 2019
Stump Jump Harrows are an age-old solution designed to fulfil the needs of many secondary tillage operations including, cultivation, weed control, breaking down of large clods and spreading of manure in a pasture situation. Harrows are so versatile they can be used in a multitude of cultivation situations. Common uses include:
- Weed Control
- Breaking down large clods
- Spreading of manure in pastures
- Breaking down uneven fields
- Levelling up pugged up pastures
- Aerating pugged up pastures
- Ground preparation prior to sowing
Why should I harrow?
Harrowing is generally completed to break up clods and provide a fine finish and good tilth or soil structure for seedbed use. Lighter harrows are also used to spread out manure which causes the pats to be opened to the sun drying out the pat and preventing adverse microcellular activities and weed growth. A larger harrow can also be used to remove weeds and to cover the seed after sowing. Importantly harrows disturb the entire topsoil which is crucial to good seedbed preparation. Deep tillage with a wide spacing Offset Disc followed by a chain drawn harrow bar can provide an excellent finish. With the deep soil penetration by the disc and the breaking up of surface clods by the harrows. Harrows used in seed-bed preparation allow water to penetrate the topsoil and reach the subsoil which is critical to ensuring a strong and stable root structure is formed.
The Delmade Difference
The Delmade Stump Jump Harrow Bars, Lifts and Frames are designed and manufactured in Tasmania. Like all the Delmade implements these harrows upload the traditional strength and excellence of design found in Delmade products.
Our most popular harrow is the standard section broadacre stump jump harrow. The broadacre stump jump features a wrap-around tine design which effectively creates the section frame and is manufactured using High Carbon Steel ‘Forged’ tines. The forging process on the broadacre units shapes the tine into a diamond ensuring that the tines are able to endure rough surfaces and clear land with ease. The tines also feature greater layback which is designed for superior trash flow.
The board acre harrows are available in four main configurations a single harrow bar, a rigid lift frame, a manual or hydraulic folding frame and a wheeled folding trailing frame. These units are built with Australian made steel and powder-coated for a durable finish.
Benefits of Harrowing
Common benefits of harrowing include:
- Pasture renovation
- Breaking up and levelling heavy soil.
- Removal of dead grass from the base of healthy grass.
- Removing lightly rooted weeds.
- Root aeration; for better water infiltration and growth.
- Works in fertilizer to both spread and maximize effectiveness.
- Growth stimulation
- Environmentally friendly grass care.
- Seedbed preparation.
Delmade offers the standard broad acre harrow, the giant extreme heavy-duty harrow and the pasture harrow. All models are available with bar and lift frames and the broadacre harrows are also available as a wheeled trailing unit.
Standard Harrow Sections
STANDARD SECTIONS utilise the 20-tine style with two draw points. Standard Sections can either be drawn by a single HARROW BAR of the desired length, or they can be mounted in a lifting frame for greater mobility. Delmade manufacture lift frames in RIGID, MANUAL-FOLDING, HYDRAULIC FOLDING and TRAILED FOLDING configurations to suit these sections.
Standard Sections are very effectively used for a wide selection of secondary tillage operations and are great for levelling and breaking down after disc or mouldboard ploughing, and for some seedbed preparation procedures. They are also highly effective for pasture renovation, puncturing matted root systems and aerating the soil.
Giant Harrow Sections
GIANT SECTIONS are super-duty special-purpose stump jump harrow sections weighing three times that of a standard 45kg section, measuring one and a half times wider. With 4 less tines than the standard range (see table), Giant Sections have an extremely high weight-per tine ratio, allowing unrivalled penetration and aggression. Giant Sections require the Delmade Heavy-Duty GIANT BAR OR FRAME for operation.
Giant Sections offer deeper penetration in more extreme situations, and, with their heavy-duty hard-faced tines and wider spacing, allow effective secondary (and even primary) cultivation in rocky or dry and crushed soil conditions. They are also extremely effective on virgin pasture renovations or situations where pastures have been heavily grazed for years without any maintenance or tilling and re-sowing. Their weight and aggression assists in the penetration and disturbance of dense pasture root systems and topsoil crusting to allow aeration, moisture penetration and fertiliser absorption. In post-harvest trash incorporation, their widely spaced tines are less prone to trash fouling.
